DOHA, Qatar — One of Qatar’s gas tankers came under attack in the Arabian Gulf, the government says. Who did it isn’t clear yet.
The ship, the Al Mayeda, belongs to Qatar Gas Transport Co. Ltd., known as Nakilat. Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attack Sunday in a statement posted on X, calling it a dangerous act that puts shipping at risk and threatens global energy supplies.
Doha may yet respond. According to the ministry, the country keeps the right to take “all necessary measures” to guard its assets, its ships and the people who crew them. It would do so under international law and the U.N. Charter.
Officials also warned of wider fallout. Calling such actions “reckless and irresponsible,” the ministry said they could carry grave consequences for security and stability in the region and for the global economy.
The environment is another worry. Hitting energy carriers could do serious damage to the marine environment, the statement said, and to water security for the region’s countries.
Authorities have started looking into what happened. So far, the ministry hasn’t named anyone behind the attack, and it gave no word on the crew.
