Death Toll in Spain Train Accident Rises to 68, García-Page Says

Regional president thanks emergency services as all units remain mobilized near Urda.

MADRID — The number of people killed in Wednesday’s accident involving two trains in Spain’s Toledo province has risen to 68, according to Emiliano García-Page, president of the Castilla-La Mancha regional government.

García-Page gave the figure in a post on X. “Much pain and deep sorrow,” he wrote. “The latest data we have is 68 deceased.”

All units have been activated and mobilized, he said, and they will remain so for as long as necessary.

He thanked Civil Protection, GEACAM, the health care system, the Civil Guard, the UME and all state and regional authorities for their work. “From the heart, thank you,” he wrote.

The accident involved Renfe’s 8 a.m. AVE train from Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha station, due at Seville’s Santa Justa station at 10:39 a.m., and an Iryo train. The two trains were between Los Yébenes and Urda, and trains are no longer running between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia.

Renfe gave no casualty figures in its earlier statement. The operator said it had activated its crisis unit and its assistance plan for railway accident victims and their families, known by the Spanish acronym PAVAFF, and that victims and relatives could call a dedicated hotline at 900 10 10 20.

García-Page said earlier Wednesday that he was following the Urda accident with attention and concern. He was on his way to the site, he added, and he and the rest of his government were suspending their schedules.
