Yasuo Fukuda, Japan’s prime minister from 2007 to 2008, has died, his Liberal Democratic Party said Monday.
Japan’s current prime minister said in a statement published by the Prime Minister’s Office that the sudden news of Fukuda’s death was saddening, and offered condolences along with the Japanese people.
The statement credited Fukuda’s “rich experience and outstanding insight.” It noted his long tenure as chief cabinet secretary before he took charge of national politics as prime minister.
While in office, Fukuda worked to improve people’s lives, including by strengthening consumer administration, according to the statement. It also cited his role as chairman of the Hokkaido Toyako Summit, where he conveyed Japan’s position on issues facing the international community.
Fukuda was the eldest son of former Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda. The two were the first father and son to each serve as prime minister in Japan’s constitutional history.
