ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Alexandria police are asking the public to help identify a person of interest in graffiti found along the Mount Jefferson Park pathway that the department is investigating as an incident of bias.
The graffiti turned up at several spots along the path and included the words “ICE” and “REPORT TO DEPORT,” as well as the phone number 1-866-DHS-2-ICE, according to the Alexandria Police Department. Investigators believe it was put there between 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, and about 6:30 a.m. Saturday.
Police released an image of the person of interest and said they are still working to identify whoever is responsible.
Detectives have canvassed the area, interviewed community members and reviewed available video. They also obtained a search warrant as part of the investigation.
In its release, the department said it takes the incidents seriously and recognizes the concern such messages can cause among residents.
“Incidents that incite fear or make members of our community feel targeted have no place in Alexandria. Every member of our community deserves to feel safe and respected.”
McGuire added that the department is committed to a thorough investigation and needs the community’s help to find those responsible.
Anyone who recognizes the person or has information about the graffiti is asked to call Detective Kay at 703-746-6263. Callers may remain anonymous.
Police are also seeking video or photos from the 100 and 200 blocks of Clifford Avenue, the 3000 block of Manning Street and areas around the pathway. Residents can upload them through the department’s online evidence portal.
