MOSCOW — A drone attack on Russia’s Voronezh region has killed two men and injured 17 people, one of them a child, Governor Alexander Gusev said on Monday.
Gusev, writing on the MAX messaging app, said air defences brought down 113 drones over the region. Fires broke out at several industrial sites.
A Moscow-bound passenger train from Anapa, in the Krasnodar region, was damaged in the attack, Russian Railways said. Five passengers were hurt, and train services through Voronezh have been suspended.
Reuters has not been able to verify the reports independently. There has been no comment yet from Ukraine on the Voronezh attack.
The region shares a border with Ukraine. Voronezh city, its capital, is about 500 kilometres south of Moscow.
The FSB said it arrested two men over a second plot, this one aimed at Moscow. The men, from the South Caucasus, were accused of preparing a drone strike on a key element of the capital’s air defences and on an electricity facility, acting on instructions from Ukraine’s SBU security service, the FSB said. The SBU has not commented.
Ukraine counted six people injured in Russian strikes overnight — four in Zaporizhzhia, Governor Mykhailo Semikin said on Telegram, and two in the Chernihiv region, according to the emergency service.
Moscow’s defence ministry said Russian forces hit a power station in Kharkiv and a warehouse in the surrounding region, plus another power station in the Khmelnitskiy region. It said port infrastructure in Chornomorsk and a cargo vessel heading to Odesa were also struck.
The United States has been pressing Ukraine to stop hitting Russian oil refineries, saying the strikes have added to high energy prices. Interviewed on Sunday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy linked any halt to Moscow stopping its attacks on power infrastructure. Failing that, he said, Washington could allow Starshield to be used over Russia to detect missile launch sites, or supply Patriot missiles.
