Five Released After Tallahassee Shooting; One Critical

Police said six people remain hospitalized after Saturday night's shooting near Florida A&M, and no arrests have been made.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The morning after gunfire wounded 11 people a short walk from Bragg Memorial Stadium, five of them were back home. Six remained in the hospital Sunday, one in critical condition, Tallahassee police said in an update.

This story follows our earlier coverage of the shooting Saturday night near Perry and Manatee streets.

Nobody had been arrested. In the Sunday statement, reported by CNN, police named no suspect and no person of interest.

Not everyone hurt was shot. A victim’s grandmother was injured in the rush to get away.

The ages tell part of the story. Six of the wounded are juveniles, and the youngest is 11. Chief Lawrence Revell also said late Saturday that one of the people shot is a Florida A&M student.

Homecoming week was under way at Florida A&M, the historically Black university where nearly 10,000 students are enrolled. Events had run through the week and were set to end Sunday.

The stadium crowd that afternoon had watched the Rattlers lose 31-28 to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Just before 8 p.m., hours after the game ended, shots rang out at Perry and Manatee streets. Police have not tied it to the game.

Early findings point to a fight first. Revell said two to three people were in an altercation before the shots, and the department’s Violent Crimes Unit has the case.

Crews were still at the scene hours later. “We’re still working the scene. Our detectives, our sergeants, our forensic personnel are all on scene and processing this as we go, taking in as much information as they can,” Revell said.

“As our detectives work to determine exactly what happened and identify those responsible, we remain committed to getting answers for these families.”

Mayor John Dailey called what happened a “truly horrific and heartbreaking tragedy,” and wrote on X: “Tonight and in the days ahead, the FAMU family is not alone. Our entire community stands with you.”

Florida A&M’s own statement put the incident near campus, on Perry Street, on the evening of Oct. 24. Campus, it said, is safe. The school asked people to stay clear of the area while officers investigate.
