Trump Rebukes Israel Over Beirut Strike as Iran Negotiator Warns Peace Deal at Risk

Iran's lead negotiator warns the peace deal cannot survive if U.S. commitments go unmet after Israel hits Beirut

President Donald Trump on Sunday rebuked Israel for striking Beirut, saying the attack should not have happened as the United States is close to a peace deal with Iran.

“This morning’s attack on Beirut should not have happened, particularly on a special day when we are so close to a Peace Deal with Iran,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump acknowledged Israel’s right to self-defense but said the attack it was responding to was “very small and meaningless” and that “nobody was hurt, injured, or killed.”

He called on all sides to stand down, saying there should be no further Israeli strikes anywhere in Lebanon and no attacks by Hezbollah or any other party against Israel.

“This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful peace — Let’s not blow it!” — President Donald J. Trump
Reuters reported that Israel said it struck a Hezbollah command center in Beirut’s Dahiyeh district after Hezbollah fire toward northern Israel, which Israeli officials described as three projectiles or drones. Reuters, citing Lebanon’s state news agency NNA, reported two people killed and four wounded, while Lebanon’s civil defense later reported three killed. Axios, citing Israeli and U.S. officials, reported that the IDF notified CENTCOM shortly before the strike.

The strike drew a response from Iran’s lead negotiator and parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who said it showed Washington either lacked the will or the ability to fulfill its commitments, warning that continuing on the current path was not possible if those commitments could not be met.
