Abigail Spanberger was sworn in as the first female governor of Virginia on Saturday. Immediately, she spoke during her swearing-in ceremony, asking Virginians to unite, as well as sharing key priorities in regard to affordability, gun violence, addiction, and mental health.
Hours after taking office, she signed 10 executive orders, among which was reversing a statement by former Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who urged state & local law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, among others, as was noted by the Governor of Virginia.
“She also made a point to reference “law-abiding immigrants” as a part of Virginia’s future, introducing the scene as a new start after a “divisive” election cycle.”
Meanwhile, in the Senate, Democrats seem to be locked
Inauguration General
The inauguration marked the culmination of a strong win for Spanberger, a former congresswoman and CIA analyst, who defeated Republican Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears by a staggering 15-point lead and brought a Democratic governor to power. Approximately 5,000 people were estimated to be in attendance for the inauguration.
“The order involving immigrants prompted rapid responses.” It’s a common-sense approach that helps prevent our local law enforcement from being tied up with matters of federal immigration policy while focusing instead on crime and safety,” said one supporter, while others from the conservative camp argued that it “may drift into the realm of ‘sanctuary cities’ and limit cooperation with federal law enforcement in light of nationwide deportation acceleration.” “
The new administration is set to be tested in the General Assembly, where it will attempt to implement its campaign promises from its inauguration.
