Trump Pushes Hyde-Smith Bid at Mississippi Rally

Trump's late Corinth stop shows how competitive Hyde-Smith's race against Scott Colom has become.

CORINTH, Miss. — President Donald Trump came to Mississippi on Monday for Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith. Her race has tightened more than Republicans expected, and she got a late visit from the president eight days before voting ends.

His voice audibly hoarse, Trump told supporters, according to The Associated Press:

“I’m here because Cindy’s doing great, but I just got to make sure. I can’t take a chance.”

Hyde-Smith, who is seeking a second full term, faces Scott Colom, a local prosecutor. Trump won Mississippi comfortably three times, and the state is usually counted as safely Republican. His late stop showed how close this race has become.

Trump called Colom a “Marxist radical” and a “shameless phony who pretends to be a moderate.” Right Side Broadcasting Network carried the full rally.

Before Trump arrived, Colom walked over to the rally site and talked with people waiting in line. He said he wanted to hear from voters who back the president.

“They actually deserve a senator that will listen to them, that actually cares about what they think, actually cares about what they’re going through,” Colom said.

After speaking for more than an hour, Trump brought Hyde-Smith up beside him. She did not stay long. “Is this not the best president in our lifetime?” she asked, then left the stage.

Turnout is already past 30 million. The Associated Press put the figure there on Monday, with Democrats trying to take the House and the Senate and Republicans trying to hold both. Control of Congress turns on the Nov. 3 vote.

Mississippi is only the first stop this week. Texas, South Carolina and Iowa are also on his schedule. He won each of them comfortably in 2024.
