Vucic Concedes as Student Movement Wins Serbia Election

The concession followed nearly two years of student-led protests over corruption and political accountability.

BELGRADE, Serbia — President Aleksandar Vucic acknowledged defeat Sunday after a student-led movement won Serbia’s parliamentary election. The official count was not yet complete.

Reuters reported that Vucic put the Student List at 135 to 140 seats in the 250-seat parliament. He projected 105 seats for his political camp and said no other group had cleared the threshold to enter parliament.

“It is clear that we have lost these elections, the Student List has won,” Vucic said.

The vote came after nearly two years of student-led demonstrations over perceived corruption and increasingly authoritarian government. The protest movement began after a railway station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad in 2024, killing 16 people.

The Associated Press reported heavy turnout, along with allegations of attempted vote buying, pressure on voters and violence. The European Union’s ambassador in Belgrade called for calm and urged all sides to avoid provocations.

University students back the newly formed Student List, whose candidates include professionals, farmers, athletes and artists. It campaigned on rebuilding democratic institutions and confronting corruption.

Serbia’s election commission was continuing its count.
