25 Taken to Hospitals After Salem High Football Bus Overturns

District says many have been released after treatment; the crash remains under investigation.

Twenty-two students and three adults were taken to hospitals after a bus carrying Salem High School’s football team overturned Friday night in Rockdale County, according to Rockdale County Public Schools.

Superintendent Stephanie S. Johnson reported no deaths. Many who received medical care had already been treated and released, she wrote in her Saturday message.

The team was heading home from a game in Norcross when the crash happened near Interstate 20 and Highway 138, 95.5 WSB reported.

Troopers told WSB that the driver, 74, lost control while leaving I-20. The bus crossed all lanes of Highway 138 and hit a black Kia Soul in the northbound lanes. Both drivers were taken to hospitals, according to the station.

The district said 27 people were aboard: 17 football players, seven trainers, two coaches and the driver, WSB reported.

One student was flown to a hospital, according to WSB. Ambulances took some students for treatment, while parents drove others.

Johnson thanked first responders, medical teams and school employees who helped the students and staff on the bus.

School and district staff visited Grady, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Piedmont hospitals in Rockdale, Newton and Walton to support those injured and their families, Johnson said.

“As our Salem family heals, we will continue to surround them with care,” she wrote.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
