PHILADELPHIA — Jalen Hurts has blood clots in both lungs, the Philadelphia Eagles and his agent said Monday, and he is expected to miss the rest of the season.
The team and agent Nicole Lynn said further testing turned up a deep vein thrombosis as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli. Hurts, 28, is clinically stable. The statement said he has no significant functional limitations.
His treatment should involve only blood thinners, according to the statement. While he is on that medication, he cannot take part in contact activities, including football.
That restriction is what puts the rest of his season in doubt. ESPN reported treatment will take at least three months.
“Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery.”
Hurts was first diagnosed in London. Specialists there found a superficial vein thrombosis in his left calf, the Eagles and Lynn said.
“Jalen was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis. After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli,” the Eagles and agent Nicole Lynn said in a statement, according to Reuters.
The London game was Oct. 11. Jacksonville won it 19-17 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. On Thursday, the Eagles said Hurts had a superficial clot in his calf. Doctors have been checking him since then.
In plain terms, a clot moved from a deep vein — often in the leg — and blocked an artery in both lungs, Reuters reported.
None of that changes the outlook the team gave Monday. It was a hopeful one. The statement added that Hurts will stay active around the team and keep conditioning, that he should be able to resume contact football once he is off the blood thinners, and that no long-term effects are expected.
Hurts led Philadelphia to the Super Bowl title in February 2025. He threw for two touchdowns and ran for another against Kansas City and was named the game’s most valuable player.
This season has been harder. Hurts started five games this season. He threw for 933 yards and eight touchdowns, with three interceptions, and completed 57.8% of his passes, according to Field Level Media. Tanner McKee, the backup, started on Sunday. Carolina won 25-14 in Philadelphia. It was a fourth straight loss for the Eagles, who fell to 2-4.
