KRAKÓW, Poland — A man drove onto Kraków’s Main Market Square on Saturday and opened fire from his car at people at random, killing six and injuring about a dozen, according to Polish police, CNN reported.
Four women and two men were among those killed, police said. The shooting began at about 3 p.m. local time (9 a.m. ET).
Police shot the suspected gunman and took him to a hospital. He is a Polish citizen, and police said he was the only perpetrator they were seeking. The man was wearing military-style attire, a police spokesperson told Reuters.
Two officers among the wounded
Two police officers were among the injured. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said in a post on X that one officer had been shot, and that a second officer was in very serious condition with three gunshot wounds.
Emergency crews were still working at the square on Saturday. Heavily armed officers in helmets and tactical gear stood guard nearby, Reuters video showed, as pedestrians walked streets at the edge of the square.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in a social media post that police were investigating the “tragic shooting” and that the interior ministry was keeping him updated.
President Karol Nawrocki said the head of Poland’s National Security Bureau was on his way to Kraków.
“My thoughts are with the victims, those injured and their families.”
Police have not released the gunman’s name or said what may have motivated the attack. Poland, like most European Union countries, strictly controls gun ownership, and few people are permitted to own a gun or carry one in public.
