Britney Spears pleaded guilty through her attorney Monday to a reduced misdemeanor reckless driving charge — commonly known as “wet reckless” — in a Ventura County case stemming from a DUI arrest earlier this year, Associated Press reported.
The charge was entered at Ventura Superior Court by Spears’ attorney, Michael A. Goldstein.
The case began with Spears’ March 4 arrest in Ventura County on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office charged her April 30 with one misdemeanor DUI count.
Under the plea agreement, Spears received 12 months of summary probation, credit for one day served, a required DUI education program and state-mandated fines. PEOPLE reported she was fined $571 and must complete a three-month, 30-hour DUI program.
The deal allows Spears to avoid additional jail time.
The reduced charge is standard when a defendant has no prior DUI history, no crash or injury occurred, and the blood alcohol level was low, according to prosecutors.
Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko said Spears had taken “full responsibility” and must continue complying with court requirements, including treatment, according to AP.
The two outlets offered slightly different accounts of Spears’ recent treatment. PEOPLE reported she had left a facility she voluntarily entered weeks earlier, while Goldstein told AP she had completed treatment and disputed reports that she left early.
A representative for Spears previously told PEOPLE the incident was “completely inexcusable” and said she would comply with the law.
PEOPLE, citing a source, also reported that Spears sought help in part because of her two sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline.
