VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV is skipping an Oct. 27 peace meeting in Assisi so he can continue recovering from thoracic surgery, the Holy See Press Office said Friday.
Leo had the operation Oct. 13. A scheduled follow-up chest X-ray has since shown that his “postoperative recovery is progressing very well,” Dr. Luigi Carbone and professor Stefano Margaritora said in a medical update posted by Vatican News.
Even so, his doctors recommended he skip the planned helicopter trip to Assisi. They called it a precaution, given how recently the surgery took place.
Leo will send a message instead, offering his closeness to the organizers and guests of the “Unarmed and Disarming Peace” meeting. The gathering marks 40 years since Pope St. John Paul II called the World Day of Prayer for Peace in Assisi.
According to the press office, Leo still believes the “Spirit of Assisi” dialogue has real value in an age of conflict. So does the search for words and gestures of peace, the statement added.
