The Iranian government says that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met with Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said in Muscat on Sunday to talk about security in the Strait of Hormuz, the larger Gulf waters, and diplomatic efforts to end the Iran-U.S. conflict.
The meeting covered bilateral relations, areas of mutual interest, regional stability and mediation efforts, the Iranian government said. Araqchi also praised Oman’s diplomatic role and its position on what Tehran described as the U.S.-Israeli war.
Araqchi told the Omani leader that the U.S. military presence in the Middle East has fueled insecurity and division, according to Tehran’s account of the talks. He called for a regional security framework free of outside interference.
Tehran said Araqchi referred to the 40-day war as evidence that U.S. military involvement makes the region less stable. The statement did not elaborate on the specific reference mentioned.
A separate post from the Royal Omani family said Sultan Haitham was briefed on Iran’s views regarding regional developments, mediation efforts, and attempts to end conflicts. Araqchi heard the Sultan’s views on advancing those efforts in a way that could support political solutions and reduce the impact of crises on people in the region.
According to the Omani post, Sultan Haitham stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in addressing regional issues and supporting peace.
The Iranian government said the talks also covered Pakistan-mediated negotiations, but it did not say what those negotiations involved or where they stand.
Araqchi reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to stronger ties with Gulf neighbors, according to the Iranian government. Oman stressed support for peace efforts and conveyed condolences to Iran.
The statements did not announce any agreement from the meeting.
