BRANDON, Fla. — A suspect and one other person died Wednesday after an active threat was reported at the Citibank Center in Brandon, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, in a report by CNN.
Sheriff Chad Chronister said preliminary information pointed to a targeted incident. Deputies were clearing the building on Wednesday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said in a post on X.
“We are currently clearing the building and will provide updates as they are available,” the sheriff’s office posted.
People near the campus said they got public safety alerts on their phones warning of an active shooter and telling them to shelter in place. Video from CNN affiliate Spectrum Bay News 9 showed a large police presence at the scene.
Citi responded in a statement to CNN. “We are aware of an incident impacting our site in Tampa, Florida and are coordinating with law enforcement,” the company said.
The campus has four three-story office buildings. Thousands of the bank’s employees work there, The Associated Press reported.
Authorities had not released the names of the two people who died, or said how the suspect died, as of Wednesday afternoon. The sheriff’s office asked people to avoid the area around Falkenburg Road while deputies worked at the scene.
