Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin agreed to extend the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation for another term in talks in Beijing on Wednesday, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The talks were held in the Great Hall of the People on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination and the 25th anniversary of the signing of the treaty.
Xinhua said China and Russia have strengthened strategic coordination and cooperation and enhanced political mutual trust.
Xinhua quoted Xi as saying that “China and Russia are two major countries with enormous influence in the world and permanent members of the UN Security Council.” They should have a strategic vision and a long-term perspective, promote the development and rejuvenation of our respective countries through higher-quality overall strategic coordination, and work for a more just and reasonable global governance system.
It was “a comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era,” he said.
They also want to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, energy, science and technology, cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and sub-national contacts, he said.
Xi also urged the two sides to continue implementing the outcomes of the meetings of the two leaders and further promote mutual trust, cooperation, and friendship.
After the talks, the two leaders signed a joint statement on deepening comprehensive strategic coordination between China and Russia and on good-neighborliness and friendship between the two countries.
The declaration also mentioned military cooperation. “Cooperation mechanisms will be deepened, and the interaction of the armed forces of China and Russia will be raised to a new level,” TASS reported.
The sides agreed to build military trust, hold more joint exercises, air and maritime patrols, and bolster coordination in bilateral and multilateral formats, TASS reported.
“China and Russia will join hands to tackle challenges and threats and to promote security and stability at the global and regional levels,” the two countries said in a joint statement.
