KYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Monday that Russia is preparing a new massive attack on Ukraine’s energy and logistics networks, timed, he said, for Tuesday’s U.S. midterm elections. In a post on X, Zelenskyy said Moscow expects the world to be watching the American vote while Ukraine’s air-defense struggles are overlooked.
“We have intel that Russia is preparing a new massive attack on our country – primarily targeting energy and logistics.”
“The assumption is basically that tomorrow the world will be watching the American midterms, and what is happening here in Ukraine, along with our difficulties with air defense and Patriot missiles, will be overlooked,” he wrote.
He urged the world to send Russia a signal that the attacks will bring it no gains. “We need signals from the world to Russia that will make them feel that terror is no good, that it will bring no gains, and that as long as this war continues, their oil will burn, and they will not be able to make money doing business with the world,” he wrote.
“We must not play games with Russia’s oil or gas revenues. We must put pressure on Russia in such a way that it has no alternative but to end this war. America can do this,” Zelenskyy wrote.
The warning came hours after Russian bombs hit a school used to distribute humanitarian aid in Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region. Ukraine’s emergency service said the strike killed at least 24 people, including rescuers and police officers.
Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy network have repeatedly knocked out power across several regions this fall, and Kyiv has pressed Washington for faster Patriot deliveries. The United States recently approved a $2.1 billion Patriot sale to Ukraine.
In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine would suspend its strikes on Russian oil refineries for a month if Washington provided Patriot interceptors for the same period.
American voters decide control of Congress in Tuesday’s elections, a result that could shape future U.S. support for Ukraine’s war effort.
