WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said he would become “Mr. Veto” if Democrats win control of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections, in an interview with the New York Post released in full on Monday.
“I guess I’ll become Mr. Veto,” Trump told the Post’s Miranda Devine on her “Pod Force One” podcast. “I’m not going to let them ruin it.”
Excerpts from the interview aired Sunday on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.” Asked how he would get things done under a Democratic Congress, Trump laid out a simple sequence.
“They’ll be sending stuff up. You veto it”
“And eventually, after a month or two of getting all vetoed, they’re just wasting [time], they come over, and you make a deal. I think that probably would happen, but hopefully we don’t have to worry about that.”
He put it more bluntly at another point in the interview. “Look, if we didn’t win — I think we’re going to do great — but if we didn’t win, I’d veto everything. I’ll be vetoing, vetoing,” Trump said.
Tuesday’s vote will decide who controls Congress for the last two years of Trump’s term. All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are on the ballot. Forecasters widely favor Democrats to win back the House, the Post reported, and Democrats have promised a round of investigations into Trump and his administration if they return to power in either chamber.
A Hard Veto to Override
A veto is not easy to undo. Congress can override one only with two-thirds votes in both the House and the Senate, a bar a narrow majority would struggle to reach.
Trump has vetoed just two bills in his second term, after vetoing 10 in his first. He told Devine the pattern has happened before. “And then at some point, we’ll probably make deals. That’s what’s happened. I mean, this wouldn’t be the first time,” he said.
In the same interview, Trump said he would “love to run again” if he had the chance, but added that the Constitution’s language on term limits is “very exacting.”
Trump is set to deliver his closing message of the campaign on Monday afternoon at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, USA Today reported.
