ANNANDALE, Va. — Fairfax County detectives believe a thief watched a man withdraw $2,400 from an Annandale bank, followed him to a gas station and took the cash from his vehicle while he was inside.
The withdrawal happened at 10:20 a.m. Oct. 23 at a bank in the 4400 block of Backlick Road, the Fairfax County Police Department said. From there, the man drove to a nearby gas station in the department’s Franconia District.
The suspect got into the vehicle while the victim was in the station. He left with the money before police arrived.
Surveillance footage caught both the suspect and his vehicle. Police released an image of him and are treating the case as bank jugging.
Detectives in the Criminal Investigations Division want to hear from anyone with information about the theft. They can be reached through the Franconia District Station at 703-922-0894.
People who’d rather not give their name can go through Crime Solvers of Fairfax County, using its website, the P3Tips app or the tip line at 866-411-8477. Police said tipsters should check back there in case detectives need more details or a reward becomes available.
Along with its appeal, the department offered advice for avoiding bank jugging. Watch for anyone who seems to be observing you outside a bank, and don’t leave cash unattended in a vehicle. If the money has to stay in the car, lock it in the glove compartment.
Changing banking habits also helps, police said, because criminals look for patterns. So does keeping the vehicle locked, the windows up and valuables out of sight.
Anyone who sees suspicious behavior or thinks they are being followed should call police as soon as possible.
