DNIPRO, Ukraine — Thirteen people were killed Thursday when a Russian drone hit a platform at Dnipro’s railway station, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said 10 more were hurt.
Two trains were at the platform when the drone struck, an ordinary commuter train and a scheduled passenger train, Zelenskyy wrote in a post on X. He called the strike “horrific.”
The 13 deaths were those confirmed when he posted. Every emergency service needed was at work on the scene, he wrote, and he sent his condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones.
His account and the casualty figures could not be independently verified.
Zelenskyy linked the attack to the easing of sanctions. He asked how many “terrorist strikes” Russia had carried out against Ukrainians since sanctions were lifted on some Russian oligarchs and on the country’s energy sector, rather than de-escalating.
Ukraine has always said that America and Europe must take just and decisive action in response to Russian escalation, he wrote. Sanctions against Moscow and its war machine, he added, should not be eased for as long as the war continues.
He called on the European Union, the United States and the Group of Seven to take new, stronger sanctions steps and thanked everyone ready to help.
