Alexandria Police Arrest Suspect in Death of Critical Missing Adult

Cochran was found dead in an Alexandria apartment after searches and investigative leads, police said.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — After arresting a 63-year-old man, Alexandria police charged him with second-degree murder in the death of a man who had been reported as a critical missing person, the department said.

John Stremple III, 63, lives in Alexandria, according to police, and is the man arrested in connection with Joshua Cochran’s death. Cochran was 44. Stremple’s booking at the Alexandria Detention Center took place on Oct. 28, 2026.

Cochran’s disappearance was first reported Monday, Oct. 26. A day later, on Tuesday, Oct. 27, family members gave police information that led officers to elevate him to critical missing status, police said.

On Tuesday evening, detectives searched Dora Kelley Nature Park with members of the Virginia Department of Emergency Management’s Search and Rescue Team, police said, as part of the investigation.

From there, investigators pursued more leads. Police said financial transaction records and security camera footage helped detectives trace Cochran’s movements and identify someone seen with him — records the department described as important to moving the case forward.

Detectives then went to an Alexandria residence, police said, and found Cochran dead in an apartment there. His next of kin has been notified.

Police said the investigation is still going on. Anyone who may be able to help it is asked to call 703-746-4444.
