Macron Says He and Trump Will Seek Energy Strike Moratorium

Writing on X after arriving in New York, Macron said the leaders would work together to protect critical infrastructure in the Middle East and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Macron also called for protecting civilians and beginning serious negotiations as soon as possible on the conditions for peace between Russia and Ukraine.

In a second post after talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Macron said he also discussed support for Ukraine with Trump, along with an energy truce and a Black Sea moratorium.

He called that a key issue for negotiations that he said must resume and lead to a just and lasting peace.

Macron said Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure threatened to leave millions of families without heating and electricity. He pledged French support through the winter and said G7 energy support would also be mobilized.

France is also strengthening Ukraine’s air defense through a contract for radar deliveries and the supply of interceptors, according to Macron. He did not specify the number of radars or interceptors or the contract’s value.

In his own post on X, Zelenskyy said the talks focused mainly on security and a winter support package for Ukraine.

Ukraine was ready to obtain additional SAMP/T air-defense systems and missiles using available funds from an EU loan, he wrote.

Ukraine is also working toward possible domestic production of the systems and missiles and developing the joint FREYJA anti-ballistic program with partners, according to Zelenskyy. He said initial results from those efforts were expected this year.
