FBI forensic specialists are working alongside Nepal Police to help identify victims of last month’s deadly floods, according to the U. S. Embassy in Nepal.
“At the request of the Government of Nepal, U. S. Federal Bureau of Investigations forensic specialists are working alongside Nepal Police to train and assist officers in fingerprint collection and analytical techniques to support disaster victim identification,”
In the same post, the embassy said the United States remains committed to helping Americans locate relatives. FBI expertise will help families of Americans and others affected get answers, it added.
In a Sept. 14 update, Nepal Police reported recovering 1, 391 bodies or partial human remains as of 8 a. m. local time. The number includes 544 male bodies, 336 female bodies and 511 partial remains.
The police reported 4, 099 people as missing, including 3, 479 Nepalis and 620 foreigners. The flood hit the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa on August 26.
The agency had recorded 9, 280 injured/rescued persons, while 3, 440 people were in holding centers. 7, 975 police officers were mobilized, while 25 police officers were out of contact.
Identification teams had collected 3, 175 DNA samples: 1, 286 from recovered bodies or remains and 1, 889 from relatives. Police had also uploaded information about 1, 355 unidentified bodies or remains to its website.
