Iran told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Saturday that its Natanz nuclear site had been attacked earlier in the day. The U.N. nuclear watchdog said no increase in off-site radiation levels had been reported and that it was looking into the incident.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi renewed his call for military restraint, warning against any action that could raise the risk of a nuclear accident. The agency did not immediately identify who carried out the reported attack or provide further details about the extent of the damage.
The report adds to growing concern around the safety of Iran’s nuclear facilities after another incident earlier in the week. On Tuesday, the IAEA said it had received information from Iran about a projectile incident and confirmed that a structure about 350 metres from the Bushehr nuclear power plant reactor was hit and destroyed.
Grossi said at the time that the reactor itself was not damaged and no staff were injured. He added that any attack at or near a nuclear power plant violates the seven indispensable pillars of nuclear safety and security during armed conflict and should never take place.
For now, the IAEA says there is no reported sign of increased radiation outside the Natanz site.
