Trump’s $3.8 Trillion Tax Bill Clears Senate Hurdle Despite GOP Dissent

Two Republicans break ranks as Trump pushes for passage before Independence Day

    Key Points:
    • Trump’s tax bill clears Senate hurdle 51‑49 ahead of July 4 deadline
    • Two GOP senators join Democrats over deep Medicaid, food aid cuts
    • Trump slams dissenters; Musk calls bill “insane and destructive”

What’s happening: President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”—a sweeping $3.8 trillion tax and spending proposal—passed a critical procedural vote in the U.S. Senate late Saturday, narrowly advancing 51–49 in a dramatic late-night session, according to the Associated Press.

Senate tension: The vote came after more than three hours of closed-door debate among Republicans. Vice President J.D. Vance waited in the chamber in case his tie-breaking vote was needed. In the end, GOP Senators Thom Tillis (NC) and Rand Paul (KY) joined all Democrats in opposition.

“It’s time to get this legislation across the finish line,” said Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the Senate Majority Leader, who led efforts to keep the Republican caucus unified.

Bill details: The 940-page legislation—unveiled just before midnight Friday—includes $3.8 trillion in tax cuts, largely benefiting businesses and high-income earners. It slashes Medicaid and food assistance programs while increasing funding for deportation and immigration enforcement efforts.

Trump’s reaction: While Trump remained at his Virginia golf resort during the vote, the White House issued a statement backing the bill. But by evening, Trump lashed out on social media at the two dissenting senators—particularly Senator Tillis—suggesting he may support a primary challenger.

Public criticism: Outside the Capitol, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk condemned the bill, writing on X that it was “utterly insane and destructive.”

What’s next: With the procedural vote now passed, Senate Republicans aim to begin full debate on Monday and vote on final passage by July 3. Moderate GOP senators and Democrats are expected to push for amendments, particularly regarding cuts to healthcare and nutrition assistance.
