Mark Carney Declares Victory as Liberals Win Tight Federal Election in Canada

Carney warns of U.S. “economic aggression” as Liberals narrowly secure minority government

Mark Carney is set to become Canada’s next prime minister after leading the Liberal Party to a narrow victory in the 2025 federal election, securing 168 seats—just four short of the 172 required for a majority. With all 343 seats reporting, the Liberals emerged as the largest party, overtaking a strong Conservative push led by Pierre Poilievre, who finished with 144 seats.

In a passionate victory speech delivered at Liberal campaign headquarters in Ottawa, Carney acknowledged the closeness of the contest and vowed to govern “for all Canadians”. His message was one of unity and reflection, emphasizing humility and a commitment to building a more resilient and independent Canada.

“We are once again at one of those hinge moments of history,” Carney said. “Our old relationship with the United States—a relationship based on steadily increasing integration—is over.”

Carney’s address was notably firm in its tone toward the United States, pointing to rising tensions under President Donald Trump’s second term.

“America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country. These are not idle threats,” he warned. “President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never ever happen.”

Carney emphasized that his campaign would prioritize sovereignty, infrastructure, and rebuilding Canada’s economy independent of American influence.

“We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons,” he said. “We are going to build, baby, build.”

International reactions followed quickly. Former U.S. President Joe Biden wrote on X, “I congratulate Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party on their success in Canada’s election. I’m confident Mark will be a strong leader for the fundamental values and interests Canadians and Americans share.”
