Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he held a “very positive and productive” call with U.S. President Donald Trump, discussing options to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and support for the country’s battered energy system. The conversation came as Russia continues strikes on power infrastructure and ahead of new Ukrainian sanctions actions.
Zelenskyy said he congratulated Trump on his recent deal in the Middle East and said that “other wars can be stopped as well,” such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He also said that the two leaders talked about “concrete agreements” and “good options” for improving Ukraine’s air defense.
In a separate update, Zelenskyy said he spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Mark J. Carney and shared details of his contacts with Trump. The two discussed Russia’s strikes on civilians and energy facilities, steps to harden Ukraine’s grid, and coordination within the “Coalition of the Willing.” Zelenskyy also highlighted Canada’s role in the PURL initiative and said there is room to expand its participation.
Zelenskyy also talked about coordinating a new round of sanctions. He said that on Saturday, Ukraine and Japan worked together on their plans, and he signed a directive that targets CEOs and businesses that make money from Russia’s conflict, sell weapons, or provide important parts and equipment. Since June, Ukraine has put in place eight sets of sanctions that are in line with those of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, and all of the European Union. According to Zelenskyy on X, Ukraine has put 281 people and 633 businesses under its authority. Kyiv is now asking for the EU’s 19th sanctions package.
He said that sanctions have become “a global form of interaction that restores the real power of justice,” and that pressure on Russia would grow. He thanked partners for including Ukrainian suggestions in their packages and emphasized that Ukraine always follows partner sanctions in its own territory.
