Zelenskyy Taps Intelligence Chief Budanov to Lead Presidential Office

Zelenskyy says the shake-up aims to sharpen Ukraine’s security and diplomatic priorities as Budanov agrees to take the post.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi stated that he had offered the military intelligence chief, Kyrylo Budanov, the position of head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, according to Zelenskyy’s post on X.

Writing on his Telegram channel, Zelenskyy explained that the decision was part of his efforts to give more clarity to the Ukrainian government’s priorities on matters of defense and security, as well as Ukraine’s diplomatic process of negotiations. His office would be responsible for implementing these priorities.

“He has specialized experience in these matters. Also, I have ordered the new head of the presidential office to work with the secretary of the national security and defense council of Ukraine and other concerned leaders and institutions on updating and submitting for approval the strategic foundations of the defense and development of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said.

Budanov reported that he accepted the offer made by Zelenskyy, according to Budanov’s post on X.

“It’s an honor to take on additional responsibility at such an important moment in our nation’s life,” he said, according to his statement. “I would like to express my gratitude to our president and to my colleagues from Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, who work diligently every day to protect our nation,” Budanov added. “Ukraine will continue to attack its enemy, protect itself, and strive toward just peace,” he said.
