Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sent out a short, moving message on Saturday, August 23, about the blue-and-yellow flag that brings Ukrainians together at home and abroad. He talked about the flag, belonging, and sacrifice. He posted the comments on X, explaining that the flag stands for protection for people who have been taken hostage by Russia and hope for people who live in occupied areas.
Zelenskyy said,
He also added,
He connected the symbol directly to the human stakes of the war, relating the idea of national identity to the genuine challenges that Ukrainian families have when they are split up by war. The president praised soldiers from all throughout Ukraine who are risking their lives to protect everyone’s right to life in our state.
This banner makes me feel free for the people we release from Russian captivity…
The letter came while Kyiv was having its annual flag-raising ceremony at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine during World War II. His staff said that President Zelenskyy was there for the ceremony. People commemorate National Flag Day every year on August 23, the day before Independence Day. The president made the holiday official in 2004, and in 2009, it grew to include official flag-raising festivities all around the country. This year’s observance is especially crucial because Ukraine is currently struggling to keep Russia from taking over its land.
Zelenskyy closed by thanking everyone who has made the colors of Ukraine more meaningful. He knew that a lot of individuals had worked hard to give national symbols more meaning during this significant time in Ukraine’s history. He finished with common Ukrainian phrases like “Long live Ukraine!” Our blue and yellow flag should always fly high! Happy Flag Day to all Ukrainians! “Honor to Ukraine!”
