Zelenskyy: Three killed in Zaporizhzhia strike as drones pound multiple regions on eve of U.N. week

Zelenskyy reports casualties in Zaporizhzhia and widespread drone attacks, pressing world leaders for stronger measures as the U.N. General Assembly opens.

Updating the situation on social media platform, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that rescue workers are still going through the rubble after a Russian attack on the city of Zaporizhzhia, where guided aircraft bombs destroyed homes and other civilian sites. He said, “Three people are confirmed dead,” and expressed his condolences to the families.

The local authorities said the attack had demolished apartment buildings and private houses in several residential districts. Zaporizhzhia region Governor Ivan Fedorov reported that at least 10 aerial bombs were dropped, destroying 15 apartment buildings, 10 private houses and other buildings.

Russia launched a large drone attack on different parts of the country during the night. Ukraine’s air force said it had shot down 132 drones, but some of them penetrated and struck targets in at least seven places. Zelenskyy wrote on social media that more than 140 drones were launched, among them “Shaheds.”.

Local authorities reported damage to a school and other civilian infrastructure in the Sumy region after overnight shelling. Fires were extinguished and rescue services remained at the scene until morning, authorities said.

Zelenskyy tied the latest attacks to the timing of this week’s global gathering in New York, stating that Russia has planned deadly attacks as the U.N. General Assembly opens its high-level meetings. The General Debate begins Tuesday, Sept. 23. He called for “real, powerful pressure” on Moscow through tougher sanctions, sustained political isolation and accountability measures
