Walmart Recalls 850,000 Ozark Trail Water Bottles Over Serious Injury Risks

Bottles linked to permanent vision loss as lids eject forcefully—recall affects 850,000 units sold since 2017.

    Highlights:
    • Walmart recalls 850,000 stainless steel Ozark Trail bottles due to explosive lid hazard.
    • Injuries include permanent vision loss after lids ejected forcefully when opened.
    • Consumers urged to stop using and return bottles for a full refund.
    • Bottles were sold at Walmart stores and online since 2017 for about $15.
    • Recall initiated on July 10, 2025, by U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Walmart has recalled approximately 850,000 Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles following reports of severe injuries caused by forcefully ejected lids when opening bottles containing perishable or carbonated beverages.

    Why it matters:

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned that these bottles can pose serious impact and laceration hazards when pressure builds inside. Three injuries have been reported, including two cases of permanent vision loss after the lid struck users in the eye.

    Product description:

The recall affects Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles with model number 83-662 listed on the packaging. The bottle is silver, stainless steel, and features a black one-piece screwcap lid. It measures 4.41 x 4.41 x 11.5 inches and is marked with the Ozark Trail logo. The model number does not appear directly on the bottle.

    What to do:

Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled product immediately and bring the bottle to any Walmart store for a full refund. The product was sold exclusively through Walmart stores and Walmart.com since 2017 for approximately $15.

“Walmart has received three reports of consumers being struck in the face by ejected lids, including two who suffered permanent vision loss,” the CPSC said in its statement.

    Additional information:

    • Recall Date: July 10, 2025
    • Hazard: Pressure buildup causes lid to eject forcefully

The recall raises concerns about the safety of insulated beverage containers amid increasing consumer demand. While Walmart has not announced broader safety reviews, experts suggest closer scrutiny of similar pressure-sensitive products.
