The Big Picture
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on August 6, 2025, to discuss the evolving dynamics of the Russia-Ukraine war and prospects for a negotiated peace deal. The conversation also included Ukraine’s future in the European Union and the country’s long-term reconstruction.
What We Know
Von der Leyen posted on X (formerly Twitter) that she and Zelenskyy discussed “the next steps on the way towards a negotiated peace agreement and Ukraine’s future membership in the European Union as well as its reconstruction.”
“Europe’s position is clear. We fully support Ukraine. We will continue to play an active role to guarantee a just and lasting peace,” she said.
Zelenskyy echoed her remarks in a post of his own, saying Ukraine remains committed to a “real and fair end to this war,” and thanked von der Leyen for Europe’s continued support in both peace efforts and Ukraine’s path to EU accession.
