Virginia Jobless Rate Climbs to 3.6% in July — Seventh Straight Increase

BLS data show a seventh consecutive uptick, with long-term joblessness and white-collar slowdowns signaling caution.

    DEVELOPING

Virginia’s unemployment rate ticked up to 3.6% in July, up from 3.5% in June — the seventh consecutive monthly rise — according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The month-over-month climb and the “seventh straight” milestone were also noted by Axios.

The softening job market is hitting long-term job seekers in particular: roughly one in four unemployed workers have been out of work for 27 weeks or more, according to a recent analysis by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. White-collar industries — including professional and business services — show signs of cooling as well, per state and BLS industry data (BLS industry table).

What’s next: Economists will watch August labor figures to see whether the upward drift in Virginia’s unemployment rate continues or stabilizes.
