Eight people were shot in a late-night outbreak of gunfire at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, and police say one suspect is in custody while two others are still being sought.
Virginia Beach Police said officers patrolling the area responded around 9:50 p.m. Saturday to reports of gunfire and a ShotSpotter activation in the 1400 block of Atlantic Avenue. When officers arrived, they found eight people suffering from gunshot wounds.
All eight were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to serious. Police said all are expected to survive.
Investigators said the shooting began after an altercation between two unrelated groups involving young adults and juveniles. Detectives believe at least three people exchanged gunfire. One of the suspects was also among those wounded.
Police identified that suspect as Jamaya Williams, 18, of Henrico County. Authorities said Williams is in custody and faces seven counts of aggravated assault, seven counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, seven counts of reckless handling of a firearm with injury, and three violations of a protective order.
Police said Isaiah Charity, 18, of Richmond, is also wanted in the case. Detectives obtained warrants charging him with eight counts of aggravated malicious wounding, eight counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and eight counts of reckless handling of a firearm with injury.
A third suspect has not been identified. Police described him as a Black male wearing a dark-colored hoodie with possible red lettering on the back.
During the investigation, officers also arrested Jahmari Savage, 21, of Chesapeake, on a concealed firearm charge. Police said he is not believed to be connected to the shooting.
Police said the other victims range in age from 17 to 24 and are from Chesterfield, Lancaster, Portsmouth, Richmond, and Snellville, Georgia. The investigation remains ongoing, and detectives are asking anyone with information to come forward.
