Vice President JD Vance said at a joint news conference in Budapest with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Tuesday that U.S. strikes on Iran’s Kharg Island targeted military sites and did not represent a change in strategy.
“My understanding, having talked to Pete and General Caine about this, is that we were going to strike some military targets on Kharg Island. I believe we have done so,” Vance said.
He said President Donald Trump had held back from targeting Iranian energy and infrastructure sites for now.
“We’re not going to strike energy and infrastructure targets until the Iranians either make a proposal that we can get behind or don’t make a proposal,” Vance said.
He added that the reported strike on Kharg Island did not signal a shift in U.S. policy and said Washington expected a response from Iran by 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Vance’s remarks drew a clear distinction between military targets on the island and Iran’s energy infrastructure. Kharg Island is widely seen as strategically important because of its role in the country’s oil export system.
