Vance Says Iran Deal Still Possible as Trump Pushes for Fast Movement

JD Vance says Trump wants quick movement as a limited ceasefire keeps a narrow diplomatic opening alive.

During remarks in Budapest on Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance said a wider agreement with Iran was still possible if Tehran negotiated “in good faith,” according to Reuters.

Speaking during a visit to Hungary, Vance said, citing what he called a “fragile truce.” “The president of the United States has told me … go and work in good faith to come to an agreement.”

“He said Trump had told negotiators to act in good faith and try to reach an agreement if Iran was prepared to do the same. “If the Iranians are willing in good faith to work with us, I think we can make an agreement,” he added.

Vance’s remarks came a day after Trump agreed to suspend planned U.S. attacks on Iran for two weeks as part of a ceasefire framework. Pakistan brokered the ceasefire, which remains limited in scope.

Vance said the United States and its allies had agreed to stop attacks on Iran, forming the basis of a truce, and that Tehran had agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Vance said that some parts of the Iranian system seemed open to talking, while others did not, indicating a division within Iran’s leadership regarding negotiations and the potential for diplomatic progress. Such differences made it even less clear whether the talks would lead to a lasting result. He also said Trump was growing impatient and wanted movement soon.
