The White House said that the U.S. military attacked members of the Tren de Aragua, who are from Venezuela, while they were on the water in international waters bringing drugs to the U.S. The operation killed 11 people. No U.S. troops were hurt.
In the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility, President Donald Trump said the action was taken “on my orders.” He called it a “kinetic strike against positively identified Tren de Aragua narcoterrorists.” He also said that the target was a ship carrying drugs to the United States.
Later, President Trump shared a video on Truth Social that looked like an explosion at sea. News outlets reported that the strike looks like in the southern Caribbean. Officials didn’t say right away where the drugs were, what kind they were, how many there were, or who died.
The U.S. government named Tren de Aragua, a transnational criminal group that came from Venezuela’s Aragua state prison system, a Foreign Terrorist Organization earlier this year. The Treasury Department in this summar also said it would impose sanctions on some of the group’s most important members.
The White House said that the strike was part of a bigger effort to stop drug trafficking networks at sea. The administration yet to release any independent confirmation of the number of casualties or the details of the cargo.
