US Central Command on Sunday warned civilians in Iran to stay at home after the command claimed that Iranian forces were launching ballistic missiles and one-way attack drones from densely populated areas of the country.
In a public statement by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the military said Iranian units have been operating from crowded parts of Dezful, Esfahan and Shiraz. CENTCOM said those locations could lose protected civilian status under international law if they are used for military purposes.
Adm. Brad Cooper, the commander of CENTCOM, accused Iran’s leadership of disregarding civilian lives while continuing attacks across the region. He said the Iranian government was not only endangering people inside Iran, but also threatening civilians across the Middle East by targeting airports, hotels and residential areas.
This warning comes at a time when the conflict between the Iranian government and US-allied forces has escalated since February 28. US Central Command claimed that Iranian forces had launched hundreds of ballistic missiles and thousands of drones since that date. However, the command claimed that the launch of missiles by Iranian forces had reduced significantly due to attacks by US forces on the military capabilities of Iranian forces.
This warning by US forces indicates that the government expects operations to continue as the conflict between the two forces escalates.
