U.S. military says blockade of Iranian ports will begin Monday

CENTCOM says vessels of all nations traveling to and from Iranian ports will face new maritime restrictions starting Monday.

The U.S. military said its forces will begin enforcing a blockade on maritime traffic entering or leaving Iranian ports at 10 a.m. Eastern on April 13 under a presidential proclamation.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the measure will apply to vessels of all nations traveling to and from Iranian ports and coastal areas, including ports along the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

CENTCOM said the blockade will not affect ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz if they are traveling to or from non-Iranian ports.

Additional guidance for commercial mariners will be issued before the blockade begins, according to CENTCOM. Mariners were advised to monitor Notice to Mariners broadcasts and contact U.S. naval forces on bridge-to-bridge channel 16 while operating in the Gulf of Oman and near the approaches to the Strait of Hormuz.
