The United States congratulated Nepal on the eve of Constitution Day and advocated a clear, constitutional course as the country gets ready for elections in the next few months, according to a press release from Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday.
Rubio added that Washington supports the Nepali people’s desire for a government that follows the constitution. He also his condolences “to the families of those killed and injured” during recent protests. It also said that the U.S. looks forward to working with Nepal to promote progress, improve security in the region, and make everyone better off.
Rubio called the Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact an important aspect of the economic collaboration. He said that the program will assist build up Nepal’s transportation and energy infrastructure, create jobs, and encourage long-term growth while also giving American businesses new chances.
The message comes at a time when Nepal is going through a political change and after days of upheaval that left dozens dead. Since then, the government has removed curfews and put in place an interim leadership ahead of national elections next year.
