U.S., India Seal 10-Year Defense Framework as Tensions Simmer Over Tariffs

Washington and New Delhi set a decade-long roadmap to expand defense ties and regional coordination.

The United States and India have signed a decade-long defense framework to tighten military cooperation and coordination across the Indo-Pacific, the U.S. Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth said.

In a post on social media platform X, Hegseth termed the pact a cornerstone for stability and deterrence as it will see increased coordination, information sharing, and technology work by the militaries of both countries.

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said the “Framework for the U.S.–India Major Defence Partnership” will guide policy across the full relationship and “usher in a new era” of ties. Singh emphasized defense as a lasting pillar of the partnership and said the goal is a free, open, rules-based Indo-Pacific.

The timing is notable. Trade frictions and tariff debates have raised the temperature in recent weeks, yet both governments are moving ahead on long-range security planning. Hegseth said the defense relationship “has never been stronger.” Singh framed the accord as proof of growing strategic alignment.

Key details—such as specific exercises, information-sharing mechanisms, and technology cooperation tracks—were not released. Implementation steps are likely to be announced by officials in Washington and New Delhi next.
