Americans in several parts of Mexico were urged Sunday to stay indoors as violence linked to cartel activity disrupted major cities, including the tourist hub of Puerto Vallarta and the state capital of Guadalajara.
In a statement issued by the United States Mission to Mexico, the authorities asked American citizens living in Jalisco, which comprises Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara; parts of Tamaulipas; Michoacán; Guerrero; and Nuevo León to avoid areas where law enforcement activity is taking place and keep an eye on the news.
This announcement came as violence and disruptions were reported in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta after local media reported a Mexican operation targeting CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes. Social media has shown scenes at Guadalajara Airport where people were rushing about as gunfire has been reported. In Puerto Vallarta, several vehicles have been set on fire, including those parked at a Costco.
Security forces have been reported to be engaging cartel members in parts of Jalisco. These have been reported as roadblocks and armed men blocking highways and tourist areas.
Air Canada has temporarily stopped its operations at Puerto Vallarta Airport due to the security situation. According to a statement issued by Air Canada, the airline has asked customers not to travel to the airport unless their flight has been confirmed.
