On Saturday, Rep. Ilhan Omar accused President Donald Trump of starting an unauthorized war with Iran and called on Congress to hold an immediate vote to limit the conflict.
In a statement, Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., said that “without congressional authority, a clear objective, or an imminent threat to the United States, President Trump is unilaterally dragging this nation into an illegal and unjustified war with Iran.”
Omar added that the strikes will not only endanger American lives but will also increase instability in the region and result in an increase in civilian casualties. Therefore, Congress should act “immediately” on the War Powers resolution by Reps. Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie, according to Rep. Ilhan Omar.
On the same day, the conflict escalated in the region. The United States and Israel carried out a number of air strikes on Iranian strategic and military targets with the objective of weakening Iranian missile and nuclear programs. According to Trump, the strikes by the United States were “major combat operations.”
Iran retaliated by launching missiles at U.S. military targets across the region on Saturday, including one near the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain . Air defense systems were activated in several countries, and there were explosions in several locations.
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the United States and Israel conducted airstrikes against Iran’s territory. According to Iran’s foreign ministry statement on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, the airstrikes were described as a criminal military aggression against Iran. Moreover, Iran’s armed forces vowed to retaliate against the attack.
The escalation came after the first strikes were launched by the U.S. and Israel, and Iran responded afterward with retaliatory missile and drone attacks.
