Ukraine Ratifies 100-Year Partnership With the United Kingdom

Kyiv finalizes a long-horizon pact with London to bind security and economic cooperation for decades.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday signed a law completing Ukraine’s ratification of a century-long partnership with the United Kingdom, moving a broad security and economic pact from promise to policy.

Zelenskyy announced the step on X (formerly Twitter) , thanking King Charles III and praising Britain’s “unwavering and principled stance.” He said the alliance “doubles down our strength” and added that, with support from London, Washington and European partners, Ukraine will keep “defending values and protecting lives.”

The signature followed a vote a day earlier in the Verkhovna Rada, which supported ratification with 295 votes, according to the parliament’s public record and Ukrainian state media.

The agreement, first unveiled during Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s January visit to Kyiv, lays out plans to deepen defense cooperation, bolster maritime security and expand joint work in trade, energy and climate transition, among other areas, according to the published text of the deal. (

Ukrainian leaders see the agreement as a long-term plan to outlive the current crisis. It will connect defense industry projects and commercial links with a key partner. Britain has framed the alliance as a promise of help that will go “beyond this terrible war,” while Ukraine has framed it as part of a larger effort to bring lasting peace to Europe.
