Ukraine Says Russian Losses Top 1.13 Million; 800 in One Day

Kyiv cites fresh daily tallies as independent estimates converge above the one-million mark.

Ukraine’s military claims Russia has lost 1,137,690 personnel since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, with 800 losses recorded in the past 24 hours as of Monday, Oct. 27, 2025, according to Defense of Ukraine on X. The update also lists two tanks, three armored vehicles, 34 artillery systems and 547 drones destroyed in the latest fighting, as assaults intensified around Donetsk after 1,342 days of combat

Independent tallies indicate the war’s human cost is well into seven figures. The Economist recently estimated total Russian casualties (killed and wounded) between roughly 984,000 and 1,438,000 as of mid-October. Earlier this year, assessments attributed to the U.K. Ministry of Defence also put Russian losses above the one-million mark.

The Ukrainian update included a quote posted by the military—“It’s motive alone which gives character to the actions of men,” from Jean de La Bruyère—alongside the daily losses infographic. Defense of Ukraine has issued near-daily figures since the invasion began; these numbers cannot be independently verified and routinely differ from lower Western estimates.

Russia doesn’t make full casualty data available. Analysts say that all battlefield counts are not accurate, but the fact that Ukrainian numbers match up with a wide range of independent numbers shows that the Russian side has lost a lot of troops more than three and a half years into the war. The Economist’s interactive analysis underscores that point, noting casualty totals approaching or exceeding one million.
