Ukraine claims to have shot down 45 Russian drones – drone wreckage found with ‘Happy New Year’ written on it

Russia attacked Kiev and other Ukrainian cities with missiles and Iranian-made drones on New Year’s Eve.

According to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, air defense personnel destroyed 45 Shahed drones. The Shahad drone is made by Iran and Ukraine accuses the Islamic Republic of supplying weapons to Russia.

According to the statement, 13 drones were downed at the end of 2022 and 32 in the new year.

Ukrainian officials have not said whether any of the drones hit their targets.

Kyiv Police Chief Andriy Nebitov shared a photo of the wreckage of the drone with the words ‘Happy New Year’ in Russian on Facebook.

“You need to know about the terrorist state and its army,” he wrote.

The attack came as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine entered its 11th month.

After a series of humiliating military defeats, Russia has targeted Ukraine’s infrastructure since October, forcing millions to live in the cold and darkness.
