Trump, Xi to Meet Thursday in South Korea; Beijing Seeks ‘Positive Outcomes’

Leaders set for Busan summit on Thursday as Beijing signals push for “positive outcomes.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday in Busan, South Korea, with Beijing signaling it wants “positive outcomes” from the talks, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The two leaders plan “in-depth communication” on major strategic issues and matters of mutual interest, ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a briefing in Beijing.

China “stands ready to work with the U.S.” and hopes the session injects “new momentum” into bilateral ties, Guo said, adding that head-of-state diplomacy plays an “irreplaceable” guiding role in the relationship. Detailed arrangements will be released in due course, the ministry noted.

The White House previously said the leaders would meet on Oct. 30 in South Korea, according to the White House. The encounter follows months of diplomatic maneuvering as Washington and Beijing navigated trade and security frictions during Trump’s first year back in office.

Separately, Japan’s new prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, and Xi are expected to hold their first summit on Friday on the sidelines of regional meetings in South Korea, reported Kyodo News, citing government sources. It would be their first meeting since Takaichi took office last week.
