President Donald Trump issued two warnings on religious violence in Nigeria, declaring the country a “COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN” and saying Washington could cut aid or use military force if Abuja fails to act. He made the claims in posts on Truth Social on Friday and again on Saturday.
In the first message, Trump said “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria,” alleged that thousands of Christians are being killed, and urged lawmakers to investigate. In a follow-up post the next day on Truth Social, he threatened an immediate end to U.S. assistance and warned of potential military action “guns-a-blazing,” saying he had instructed the Department of War to prepare.
Nigeria’s response came in a formal statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, which rejected characterizations that do not reflect conditions on the ground and reaffirmed a commitment to tackle violent extremism, protect citizens, and uphold religious tolerance. The ministry mourned victims, praised the armed forces, and called for continued engagement with partners.
The exchange underscores rising diplomatic tension as Nigeria presses security operations against extremist and criminal groups while stressing its pledge to defend people of every faith.
